Overview

Dear Quilting Mates,

I do love to offer cruises themed on quilts made from reproduction fabric taught by teachers who are knowledgeable of the Civil War era as it pertains to quilting. I am delighted to offer two incredible teachers for our 2023 Legacy Quilting Voyage sailing. Paula and Pam have traveled with us many times before. You may know them from our cruises, or perhaps you know them from the fabric they design or patterns and books they write. They are all amazing women, teachers, quilt designers, and friends.

During this trip, we will get to know more about this era in history, the techniques used in making and designing these projects, and enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean. What a treat! We will have the experience of sailing on Allure of the Seas from Galveston for the first time. You will be able to see the newly constructed $125 million cruise terminal inside and out. We can swim with the dolphins, taste some tamales, and visit the ancient Mayan ruins. I sincerely hope you can join us on the educational and enjoyable cruise.

Paula Barnes

Paula Barnes

Paula is one of the owners of Red Crinoline Quilts, formerly Bonnie Blue Quilts, which specializes in vintage and reproduction fabrics and patterns. Paula is the exclusive designer for the company. Her passion for fabric and quilts of the past inspires beautiful reproduction quilts, which incorporates today's simplified quilt making tools and techniques.

Using antique quilts as her inspiration, Paula designs traditional timeless quilts. Her designs are reproductions of actual antique quilts or are inspired by them. Paula designs reproduction fabrics with Marcus Brothers.

Paula has over 20 years of teaching experience in Dallas and Houston quilt shops, and enjoys numerous distinctions and guild affiliations throughout the state of Texas. Paula's workshop and lectures include "Designing a Quilting Studio", "History of the Quilts from Bonnie Blue Quilts ", "Exchange Quilts," and others.

Pam Buda

Pam Buda

If it is true what they say..."Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life", then I go to play, not to work. Early in my career, I designed and patterned original soft cloth dolls, but now I devoted my time to designing quilts and fabric for Marcus Brothers. I started my company, Heartspun Quilts in 2004, featuring traditional blocks and quilts. I have patterns for quilts large and small, with some using pre-cuts, as well as Block of the Month programs.

I joined the Marcus Brothers Fabrics family as a licensed designer in 2010, and have been designing fabric for them ever since. I'm presently working on new quilt patterns, fabric lines and writing my first book for Martingale Publishing company. I thoroughly enjoy traveling, giving lectures and workshops to guilds, quilt shops, and on quilting cruises all over the United States

Crosstown Pavement

Crosstown Pavement

Crosstown Pavement is one of those quilts that looks difficult but is actually very easy. Paula has simplified the piecing with the use of strips – all strips – so sewing small square together while sailing is something you won’t need to do. Honestly, it is likely you will finish this beautiful quilt top before the end of the cruise so all you will need to do when you return home is quilt, bind, and enjoy!

Finished size: 78” x 78”

5 yards of coordinated backing fabric will be needed. Please order when you order the Sail ‘n Sew kit on the registration form.

NOTE: If you choose to provide your own fabric you will need the Crosstown Pavement pattern.

Mercantile Nine Patch

Mercantile Nine Patch

Pam was so excited when we asked her to teach on another cruise because she has the perfect cruise quilt – one made with only strips and squares!  Both of the blocks Nine Patch units are made from strip sets.  How easy is that??  No cutting or sewing small pieces!!!  That means the quilt blocks go together pretty quick and easy. The border, sashing, and binding are all the same fabric. We agreed with her! This one is perfect for a lazy day of sewing on the high seas.

Finished size: 68” x 80”

5 yards of coordinated backing fabric will be needed. Please order when you order the Sail ‘n Sew kit on the registration form

NOTE: If you choose to provide your own fabric you will need the Mercantile Nine Patch pattern

Optional Sail 'n Sew Fabric Pack

Our incredible Sail 'n Sew fabric pack includes all of the fabrics and patterns for your projects and they are pre-cut so all you need to do is sit down and sew! The price of the Sail ‘n Sew fabric pack is $370 and it includes precut fabric for the quilt top for both projects including the borders, binding and pattern.

If you are interested in only one of the kits, you can specify which one on the registration form when you sign up for the cruise. If you would like a Sail ‘n Sew pack, simply select both kits when you fill out the registration form and we'll have it waiting for you on the ship.

If you do not wish to purchase a Sail 'n Sew Fabric Pack, remember to pack your own fabrics. We will not have fabrics available for purchase aboard the ship.  You will need to bring your fabric pre-cut and ready for class. You must also bring your pattern or book. You can purchase or download the patterns here: Crosstown Pavement pattern  and Mercantile Nine Patch pattern.

Note: View the preliminary 2023 Legacy Quilting Voyage Supply List.  A finalized supply list will also be sent to you 90 days prior to departure. We will not have a store onboard. Please bring all supplies you will need according to the supply list. We suggest you bring an extra project if you feel like you will finish the class projects and need extra sewing.
