Overview

Dear Friends,

Three of my favorites in cruising - Harmony of the Seas, Chris Hoover, and Raija Salomaa. First, I believe my all-time-favorite ship is Harmony of the Seas. It holds many fond memories for me. I absolutely love the staff. They really know how to take care of us and we are quite famous on this ship. When someone says "The Quilters are onboard!" I am pleasantly surprised at how many of the crew respond positively. Harmony just offers so many neat venues and restaurants and the entertainment is always top notch. You never have a problem of having nothing to do on this ship. Second, Chris Hoover (you know her pattern company - Whirligig Designs) is just a dream to work with. Her pattern designs are really fun and while this quilt is easy, it still looks interesting. The fabrics are delicious. Trust me - you will love her. And third, Raija Salomaa is our little teacher from Finland with her cute little accent and all her wonderful stories from her homeland. Her project is one that I designed awhile back and have wanted to offer so Raija was the perfect choice to teach it. Wait till you see the fabrics from Island Batik! Heavenly!!! I invite you all to join us on this magnificent ship with my two teaching friends. We will have a blast, get to know some new friends, and go home with some beautiful projects. Quilting and sewing with friends - what could be better?

    Chris Hoover

    Chris Hoover

    www.whirligigdesigns.com

Chris began quilting in 1989 when she made her first sampler quilt. Sewing a block a week quickly turned into sewing a block a day and soon sampler quilts and scrappy quilts became her all-consuming passion. “Quilting soothes my soul and has kept me sane many times over the years!” Her eclectic style is inspired by everything from color and texture to architecture and nature and she loves to share her passion speaking and teaching classes for quilt shops and guilds since 1999. Her designs have been seen in Quiltmania, Best Fat Quarter Quilts, Best Weekend Quilts and Quilts from Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks. She was a finalist in McCall’s 2012 Design Star competition.

“My designs may look complicated but they are easily broken down into simple elements. I encourage quilters to see beyond the color and fabric in a quilt and to imagine the possibilities of the design – how to make it suit their individual style.” Chris designs under the name Whirligig Designs.

    Raija Salomaa

    Raija Salomaa

    www.quilterstreasurechest.com

Raija was born and raised in Eno, a quaint little town in Eastern Finland. Raija met her soul mate and the love of her life while studying in the US. They are the proud parents of two adult daughters.

Though avidly sewing since elementary school, quilting was something Raija didn’t know anything about prior to moving to the States. The moment she saw her first quilt it was love at first sight.

Raija’s desire to become a quilt pattern designer started almost immediately, and her pattern company – Quilters’ Treasure Chest was born in 2004. Her designs have been featured in multiple national publications. Raija loves tools that make accuracy easier, so it's no surprise she is a certified Studio 180 Design instructor. She enjoys lecturing at guilds and teaching workshops and currently resides in Arkansas.

Tattoo has interlocking pieces within the blocks that create movement across the quilt and the partial pieced border draws your eye from bottom to top making this simple quilt visually interesting.  With just 6 fun prints and a few accents, you can create this fun quilt in no time.  And what could be better than that!

Quilting Classes in the Conference Center!

    Day 4

    Cozumel, Mexico

The Conquistadors first saw Mexico from the shores of Cozumel while searching for gold. Today, visitors to the island continue to seek out gold and silver jewelry in the shops of San Miguel while having a great time in its many local bars and restaurants. Plus, the waters around Cozumel's sheltered coral reefs make this one of the best snorkeling areas in the world. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Tulúm, majestically perched above the turquoise Caribbean. The site was occupied as far back as 600 A.D. However, it was most densely populated around 1200 A.D. You will be struck by the pyramid-shaped El Castillo, which dominates the city from atop a forty-foot cliff. The nearby Temple of the Descending God provides equally excellent insight into the architecture of the Mayan people, who gained considerable achievements in the arts and sciences, only to decline and vanish for no apparent reason.

    Day 4 Image

    Day 5

    Roatan, Honduras (Class Day)

Roatán’s diverse blend of cultures and traditions is enough to charm anyone. But its mangrove forests, dense jungles, and swaths of white-sand beach will make you want to stay forever. Divers and snorkelers from all over the globe flock to the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands every year see to the world’s second largest barrier reef firsthand. Roatán cruises provide access to laid-back beach towns and secluded shores. On the Big Island, you can mingle with monkeys and “Jesus” lizards, snorkel with stingrays, and zipline through rainforest canopies. If it’s culture you crave, the island’s unique and vibrant blend is more than satisfying— made up of ex-pat sun seekers, Hondurans from the mainland, descendants of European settlers, and Garífuna, whose Afro-Carib-Arawak heritage still flavors centuries-old communities like Punta Gorda.

Note: Due to only two cruising days on this itinerary, we will have class on this day. We want to be sure you get started on both projects early in the cruise and have a day of sewing when we cruise toward home the final day. We will dock at 8:00 AM  and we depart at 5:00 PM so there will be plenty of time for you to go ashore, walk around, see what is in port and still get the instruction on the project. We would encourage you to do this in the afternoon once the major part of the teaching is done.

    Day 5 Image

    Day 6

    Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico

Past meets present in Costa Maya. Cruise to Costa Maya and find ancient Maya ruins and mysterious jungles just begging to be explored, as well as private beach clubs and trendy restaurants— all in one place. It’s 250 square miles of paradise packed with entertainment and history, all just 30 miles south of Cancun. The Great Maya Reef just off the coast is the second largest in the world— it’s a must-snorkel spot. Or you can kick back at the port village of Mahahual with an ice-cold michelada— a spicy beer cocktail— in hand. For a culture fix, head to the Kohunlick ruins to see the famous Temple of the Masks.

    Cabins

With so much to do onboard, chances are really good that you will just use your cabin for changing and sleeping, but it's nice to know that if you want to spend more time there, you will indeed be comfortable. All standard staterooms are attractively decorated in soft tones with fine light woods and two pieces of artwork on the walls. Each stateroom has two beds that convert to queen-size, a private bath, phone, interactive flat-screen TV, mini-bar, hair dryers and air conditioning/heat controls. Bathrooms are on the small side, but functional, and showers have those wonderful, half-round sliding doors as opposed to clingy curtains. Soap and shampoo are also provided.

    Travel to and from Destination

You will be responsible for getting to and from the ship in Orlando (Port Canaveral), FL.

    Dress

    • Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.
    • Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed.
    • Formal: There are those on a cruise ship that make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. However, you can also take a more simple approach and just "dress nice" meaning generally what is referred to as church clothes. A simple pair of black pants with a nice blouse would suffice on these evenings. Men can bring a sports jacket or just a nice shirt is acceptable. There will be 2 formal nights on our cruise and the food is really nice on these dinners so you don't want to miss it!

NOTE:  There are times that the Conference Center can be chilly.  Be sure and bring a light sweater just in case you get cold.

    Gratuities

Gratuities are a part of your cruise expense and total $14.50 per day. This fee covers everyone who serves you while you are onboard including all onboard staff, dining staff, and your cabin steward.  Because of our group status, Stitchin' Heaven Travel pays these gratuities for our entire group prior to sailing.  Therefore, you will be charged for them at the time of final payment. A 18 percent gratuity is automatically added to bar tabs.

    Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included, but is available for your protection from Royal Caribbean in the form of their Travel Protection Program. It is $109 per person and both cabinmates must purchase it separately. In the event insurance is used please be aware that it covers the cost of the cruise only. Sewing package fees are not refunded.
**Insurance fee will be added to your reservation total
