On February 8, 2003, Joan Ford took her first quilting class and was hooked! In 2006, Joan established her company, Hummingbird Highway, and these days she is best known for patterns, books, and workshops featuring the popular ScrapTherapy® technique. She feels strongly about helping quilters relieve the guilt of a growing scrap fabric stash by cutting, storing, and using scrap fabrics in a variety of quilted projects.

A thorough overview of her process is detailed in all three of her ScrapTherapy books published by The Taunton Press: ScrapTherapy, Cut the Scraps!, Scraps Plus One! and her newest book in the ScrapTherapy series, The Versatile Nine Patch.

Joan is passionate about exploring a variety of quilting techniques including those that represent a unique interpretation of well-established methods, without compromising the quilt’s journey.

As owner of Hummingbird Highway, LLC, Joan designs in her home studio and office. She also lectures and teaches workshops throughout the United States and Canada

    Barbara Black - Scrappy Plus

    Barbara Black - Scrappy Plus

Carefully placed colors make the “Plus” blocks pop on this charming scrappy quilt. By using a variety of low-volume gray prints, the background becomes a diagonal plaid. Plaids and plusses? Ingenious!

    Finished Size: 60" x 75"

NOTE: Fabrics in our Sail 'n Sew kits will be similar but not exactly as shown. If you do not purchase the Sail N Sew you will need to purchase the pattern here: Scrappy Plus

Joan Ford - Split the Check

Joan Ford - Split the Check

9-patch blocks sewn together in alternating dark-light-dark and light-dark-light values makes a basic checkerboard quilt. “Split the Check” takes that basic concept a step further. Start with 9-patch blocks in two scrappy colors, grounded with yardage, then add diagonal sashing strips through the center of each block and everything changes! Follow unique construction tips to make the blocks, then choose from a variety of block lay-outs  to create an amazing one-of-a-kind coordinated scrappy quilt.

    Finished Size: 59" x 77"

NOTE: Fabrics in our Sail 'n Sew kits will be similar but not exactly as shown. The book is not included, you will need to purchase it and bring it with you. You can purchase it here: Versatile Nine Patch

    Day 4

    Philipsburg, St. Maarten

When the Spanish closed their colonial fort on St. Maarten in 1648, a few Dutch and French soldiers hid on the island and decided to share it. Soon after, the Netherlands and France signed a formal agreement to split St. Maarten in half, as it is today. Philipsburg displays its Dutch heritage in its architecture and landscaping. The island offers endless stretches of beach, beautiful landscapes and great shopping. Compete in an actual race on an America's Cup shortened course. Grind a winch, trim a sail or just sit back and enjoy. Professional sailors will give you a quick lesson, then you're off to compete on Stars and Stripes, one of the most famous sailboats in the world. When shopping on Front Street, it's fun to stop in and see Nick Maley, the Yoda Guy.

    Day 4 Image

    Day 5

    San Juan, Puerto Rico

Behind stone walls, Old San Juan charms with 500 years of history, colorful colonial buildings and streets lined with shops, galleries, and cafes. Experience Puerto Rico's enchanting natural side in the nearby rainforest. When you're in San Juan, don't miss the opportunity to witness the pinnacle of natural beauty by exploring Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rain Forest. It features more than 240 species of trees, hundreds of miniature orchids, and what was once believed to be the Fountain of Youth.

    Travel Information

    Cabins

With so much to do onboard, chances are really good that you will just use your cabin for changing and sleeping, but it's nice to know that if you want to spend more time there, you will indeed be comfortable. All standard staterooms are attractively decorated in soft tones with fine light woods and two pieces of artwork on the walls. Each stateroom has two beds that convert to queen-size, a private bath, phone, interactive flat-screen TV, mini-bar, hair dryers and air conditioning/heat controls. Bathrooms are on the small side, but functional, and showers have those wonderful, half-round sliding doors as opposed to clingy curtains. Soap and shampoo are also provided.

    Travel to and from Destination

You will be responsible for getting to and from the ship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

    Dress

    • Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.
    • Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed.
    • Formal: There are those on a cruise ship that make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. However, you can also take a more simple approach and just "dress nice" meaning generally what is referred to as church clothes. A simple pair of black pants with a nice blouse would suffice on these evenings. Men can bring a sports jacket or just a nice shirt is acceptable. There will be 2 formal nights on our cruise and the food is really nice on these dinners so you don't want to miss it!

NOTE:  There are times that the Conference Center can be chilly.  Be sure and bring a light sweater just in case you get cold.

    Gratuities

Gratuities are a part of your cruise expense and total $14.50 per day. This fee covers everyone who serves you while you are onboard including all onboard staff, dining staff, and your cabin steward.  Because of our group status, Stitchin' Heaven Travel pays these gratuities for our entire group prior to sailing.  Therefore, you will be charged for them at the time of final payment. A 18 percent gratuity is automatically added to bar tabs.

    Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included, but is available for your protection from Royal Caribbean in the form of their Travel Protection Program. It is $109 per person and both cabinmates must purchase it separately. In the event insurance is used please be aware that it covers the cost of the cruise only. Sewing package fees are not refunded.
**Insurance fee will be added to your reservation total

**Residents of NY are not covered under this policy
