Penny Haren - April 17-18, 2020

Penny Haren

For more than 30 years, as a quilter and several years as a shop owner, Ohio-based Penny Haren has been developing and teaching techniques that make it quick, easy and fun for quilters —even beginners—to create heirloom quality quilts with stunning results.

As a member of the Creative Grids® team, she has developed several rulers and works with nationally known designers as they “give birth” to their creations.  Adding features that make it possible for quilters to achieve perfect piecing with ease is her favorite part of the job!

Penny's Play Before You Pay class series is a fun and exciting way to learn what the Creative Grids® line up has to offer! Penny introduces you to several Creative Grids® Rulers in a short morning class, then, the afternoon class offers a in depth look at what each ruler can do.  Penny brings the rulers and some of her favorite notions so you can play before you choose your favorites and purchase only the ones you want.

Bust Your Stash • Friday, April 17, 2020

Join us for an action packed “Play before you Pay Creative Grids® event.  All rulers and fabrics are provided so you can make four to five different blocks – and learn additional techniques – in a fun and easy class.
Create blocks that include fudge factors so beginners to experts can sew them in a matter of minutes.

Pt. 1 • 9:00-12:00

Make perfect “Flying Geese” blocks by trimming them AFTER you sew the bias edges. Sew “Cat’s in the Cradle” blocks without ever cutting a triangle. Cut charm squares at an angle and trim them after sewing so every block is the exact same size. Bonus? The angled seams never have to match! Then piece a “Scrap Crazy” block in a matter of minutes and see how this is the perfect place to showcase all those decorative stitches on your machine! If time allows, make half-square triangles from 10” squares and turn them into a “Delectable Mountains” block or make a quick and easy piano key border.

Along the way, learn tips and tricks for rotary cutting as well. After all, don’t we all want to reduce cutting time and have more time to sew?

Featured Creative Grids® Rulers:
• Ultimate Flying Geese Tool – CGRDH4
• Cat’s Cradle Tool – CGRDH1
• Straight Out of Line Tool – CGRKA3
• Scrap Crazy 6 – CGRMT6
• 10” Square – CGR10
• 2 ½” x 12 ½” Rectangle – CGR212

These tools are featured in several books and patterns so prepare to be inspired!

Pt. 2 • 1:00-4:00

Medallion Quilt
Make perfect “Log Cabin” blocks by trimming each round as you go. Learn how to sew star blocks with floating points – and never cut a triangle.  Create “Square on Square” blocks in two sizes from one tool. And, finally, sew a twelve petal Dresden Plate block and learn how to “separate” it to create even more design possibilities.

Featured Creative Grids® Rulers:
• Log Cabin– 6” – CGRJAWMN6
• Strippy Star - CGRDH2
• 8” Square on Square – CGRJAW8
• 30 Degree Starburst - CGRISE30

Once you know how to use the tools, these techniques can be combined to make this queen-sized Medallion Quilt. The pattern is only available to shops who host a Creative Grids® event – and is your gift for attending the workshop!

Saturday, April 18  •  Gifts for Every Season

Join us for a day of fun! Learn how to use three different Creative Grids® Trim Tools which are featured in several Cut Loose Press patterns. These projects are fast fun and easy – when you have the right tools! By the end of the day, you will have ideas for everyone on your list.

9:00-12:00 • Around the Block

Log Cabin block
The 8" Log Cabin Block-
The Cut Loose Press Log Cabin Leaves Pattern adds a “Cathedral Window” technique to a traditional half log cabin block. In class, make a half log cabin block (the least known of the log cabins and my personal favorite) and then add the curves - by folding a square in half on the bias and then pulling it back to create the curve.

The 6" Curvy Log Cabin block-
The six-inch curvy log cabin block is featured in the Cut Loose Press pattern – Roundabout. It works like the traditional log cabin – the strips are cut approximately ¼” wider so they can be trimmed to size after each round. BUT, since the widths are different for the lights and darks, the tool has two different sets of squares.

The 6", 8" and 10" Pineapple Trim Tool-
This simple version of a pineapple block can be made in literally half the time of a traditional pineapple block because you are trimming half as many times. Therefore, it is the perfect introduction to the Creative Grids® Pineapple Trim Tools. It looks like these blocks are set on point, but, the design is created by joining four blocks (12 blocks make up the center). Once again, this technique is featured in a Cut Loose Press pattern – Pineapple Pinwheels.

1:00-4:00 • What's Your Angle?

Creative Grids 10 Degree Triangle trimmed with Creative Grids 60 Degree Triangle -
The Cut Loose Press Magic Triangle pattern uses the Creative Grids 10° triangle to cut the wedges– which are curved when pieced and then trimmed with the 12 ½” 60° triangle ruler.  Everyone will complete a “wedge” in class. We will take these wedges and show four different layouts! The pic on the right with the candle gives you a perspective of size.) I pieced this in an hour and a half – and am making tons of these for gifts!

Creative Grids 45 Degree Triangle or Creative Grids Spiderweb -
This Crazy Christmas Tree is a version of a stack and whack technique that also uses the CGRKA6. In class I will show how to cut it out of two different fabrics for the background to simplify the technique.

Creative Grids Square on Square Tool -
The Cut Loose Press Storm on the Lake pattern uses the six-inch Creative Grids Square on Square tool to create two different sizes of square on square blocks. These, combined with the paper-pieced diamond units, create the pattern. We will create all three units in class.
