By the fourth year of the Civil War, even southern belles were stitching their own clothing and household bedding. Without the ability to purchase new fabrics, the traditional Nine Patch block was ideal for utilizing scraps for quilt making. Even though times were destitute, beauty was still important as shown in this quilt. Without enough of one fabric to make all of the alternating blocks, the creative quilter made a focal point of darker fabrics and used larger pieces to create a decorative border.
