Dear Friends,
We are so excited about this cruise as we will be offering you the opportunity to learn and improve your longarm quilting skills while enjoying the beauty of the Caribbean. While this fun and educational event is sponsored by Handi Quilter, the classes we will be offering onboard are generic and the information is applicable to any longarm quilting machine. Independence of the Seas offers an array of options for dining and entertainment. The food is amazing. The crew is always fabulous and treats you like royalty. The entertainment is superb. The poolside music, evening shows, parades, and ice shows are all so professional and top tier. And if that is not enough, the conference center is state of the art. I hope to see you on board with us!

Adam Rateliff grew up in a family of fiber artists. His grandmother could create anything with a needle and embroidery floss; his mother is a very talented sewist, especially with garments and costumes. He remembers, at a young age, sitting and watching his mother create, and one day asked her to teach him how to sew. He retained those skills and built on them throughout his life and finds his joy and happiness helping quilters realize their quilting goals.
Adam began quilting in 2012. As a beginner he was in awe of longarm quilters, imagining what it would be like to have the freedom of finishing his quilting projects himself and the creativity it would inspire. After much thought and some good friends for support, he purchased a HQ Infinity® with Pro-Stitcher®, and has been quilting professionally ever since.
Adam enjoys teaching quilting classes at local shops, guilds, and in his home studio. His students are those who are usually found laughing the loudest while working on brand new skills. Adam excels at getting quilters outside of their comfort zone, teaching the best ways to use rulers, free motion, or blending Pro-Stitcher designs with free motion work. His relaxed fun style in and out of class, inspire others to have fun with their journey in quilting.
Adam is also a member of the Handi Quilter Inspiration Squad, and can be found making how-to videos on his YouTube channel at AdamSewFun. He also inspires others through multiple social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. A native of California, he spent four years in Eugene, Oregon and he recently spent two years in Cleveland, Ohio. He and his family (including dogs Duchess and Barry) look forward to his upcoming relocation back to California in the summer of 2021.
At age five, Susan Manry’s mother taught her to thread a needle and make a running stitch. Before long, she had taken over the sewing machine. Growing up, Susan’s interests included textiles, drawing, design, and a broad range of arts and crafts. While raising three busy children and running an insurance business with her husband, her hobbies expanded to include digital drawing, web authoring, and computer technology.
Yearning for a career using her creative talents, Susan was smitten after discovering the combination of her creative joys in one activity, long arm quilting! Fabric, drawing, design, and sewing all in one complete package was simply too enticing to resist, and soon she was happily partnered with her HQ Fusion® and Pro-Stitcher®. Mastering Pro-Stitcher and Pro-Stitcher Designer™ and seeking innovative ways to use both, Susan now enjoys quilting professionally with the HQ Infinity®. She has also added the HQ Sweet Sixteen® to her studio, expanding her skills and talents to include sit-down quilting.
Susan believes she was meant to quilt and she relishes any opportunity to share her love and knowledge of the craft with others. She lives in Central Texas with her husband, Mike, and their two pups.
Micki Chappelear resides in Hillsboro, Illinois, a rural farming community where she has lived her entire life. She was introduced to her love of sewing through 4-H and doing alterations at a men’s clothing store at the young age of 16. Growing up in a family of five children, Micki shared the joy of creating crafts and sewing with her mother, who always made the family’s clothing.
Later in life, Micki found her passion for longarm quilting while at a Mothers’ Day outing with her sisters, taking their mother to a quilt show. While there, Micki’s sister spotted a Handi Quilter machine and said it looked like something she would like. Micki tried the machine and was hooked! After two months of dreaming about the machine and the possibilities of what she could create, and after doing her research as a consumer, she ordered the HQ Fusion® with Pro-Stitcher® and never looked back! Each day she quilts, she looks forward to turning on her machine and spending the day doing what she loves. Micki now also owns the HQ Sweet Sixteen® and all three models of the HQ Stitch machines.
Micki and her husband have a married daughter and two darling granddaughters, Gracie and Piper. Gracie already has her first sewing machine and when she comes to visit she always asks to quilt. Micki stays busy making memories with her family and of course, with Handi Quilter

1. Confetti Quilting
Adam loves all types of long arm quitting and often incorporates robotics, rulers, and free motion into designs, which he calls his style of confetti quilting. In this class he will talk about his process of coming up with his quilting plan and show you how easy it is to start a design with Pro-Stitcher and with a little imagination and thinking out of the box, turn that design from good to great.
2. Taming Tension with Thread Play
Tension is always the number one issue people face when long arm quitting. This class will show some tips and tricks to getting that tension right every time. Adam is a lover of all things thread and will show how easy it is to work with them. Join him as he talks bobbin thread, top thread, and ways to get that bobbin tension the same every time.
3. Panels are a Quilter's Best Friend
As a fellow quilting, I know we don't want to practice on our prized quilts, but I also know practice makes perfect. Therefore, I love panels. Panels give defined areas to stitch without the hours it takes to create. I use panels all the time and with long arm quilting, we can make a panel as catchy as the most difficult patterns.
4. Do You See What I See?
Adam loves stitching the negative space of his quilts. It gives him the ability to bring elements of his quilt into the quilting process. The way we stitch a quilt on the long arm can drastically change the quilt in so many ways. This class will talk about bringing in those elements of the quilt or using geometric shapes in the negative space to add a wow factor.
Farewell Party
We will have a going away celebration complete with champagne and cocktails. This will be a very special time as our panel of teachers and staff will discuss "So You Think You Want to Have a Longarm Business?"
As you board your cruise and get settled in, take some time to unwind and explore the ship! Join us from 7-9 PM as we kick-off our cruise with a Meet 'n Greet Kick-Off Party in the Conference Room. Plan to stop by and meet the instructors; Adam Rateliff, Micki Chappelear, and Susan Manry, and Stitchin' Heaven staff.
Orlando, Florida
Most people know Orlando as America’s theme park capital. While a day (or several) dedicated to all your favorite rides and shows is a must for any vacation from Orlando, this shining city on Florida’s Space Coast offers so much more than that. If you’re cruising from Orlando, get to know the area’s other wonders — like its locally loved surf spots, sprawling citrus groves, off-road motor trails and emerald golf courses. Start your day by watching the sunrise from the sands of the Canaveral National Seashore. Then grab breakfast at a cozy café in Historic Cocoa Village. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators as you zip through the St. John River marshlands on an exhilarating airboat ride. Or climb to the top of Exploration Tower for panoramic views of Port Canaveral, the cruise port near Orlando. And don’t forget to drop by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where you can learn all about space travel and see both the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Saturn V moon rocket.
Class Day! We will be docked in the Grand Bahamas but classes will be available during the day. Plan to go ashore if you want or you may decide to stay on board and learn about long arm quilting.
Grand Bahama Island
It’s easy to see why Grand Bahama Island is one of the most popular in The Bahamas chain. Its postcard-perfect beaches are made of sand that shimmers like pearls, fronting crystal-clear waters in every hue of blue. And Freeport and Lucaya have plenty of thrills for everyone, from golfing and gambling to eco-adventures and watersports. Hike Rand Nature Center’s forest-lined trails and discover cascading waterfalls at the Garden of the Groves. Cruise to Grand Bahama Island and dive deep into acclaimed underwater spots or join in a wildly festive junkanoo parade. Capture an authentic portrait of Bahamian life— from the first beat of the Goombay drum to the last sip of a fruity Bahama Mama.
Class Day! We will be docked in Nassau but classes will be repeated from Day 2 so you can catch the ones you really want to learn. Plan to go ashore if you want or you may decide to stay on board and learn about long arm quilting.
Nassau, Bahamas
Caribbean charm shines in the Bahamian capital, where you’re never more than a few steps away from rhythmic percussions, appetizing flavors, white-sand beaches, and some of the clearest waters in the world. This picture-perfect paradise was once a pirate’s haven— and you can explore its colorful past of buccaneers, blockade-runners and bootleggers along historical streets and at the three colonial fortresses that line the shores. If you’re looking for a more hands-on maritime adventure, look no further. Cruise to Nassau and swim with stingrays, dive with dolphins, or spot colorful coral on a glass-bottom boat. And just across the bridge is beautiful Paradise Island, home to world-famous luxury hotels and resorts. Spend the day at the famous Atlantis and splash your way through its expansive water park, grab a piña colada at the Marina Village, and spot the hammerhead sharks in Predator Lagoon.
CocoCay Day! Our classroom will be closed during the day so all guests and staff can visit the amazing private island of Royal Caribbean, CocoCay. In the evening we will have a going away celebration complete with champagne and cocktails. This will be a very special time as our panel of teachers and staff will discuss "So You Think You Want to Have a Longarm Business?"
