Is a Block of the Month worth it? (and how it differs from a kit)

A Stitchin' Heaven Block of the Month quilt

Quick answer

A Block of the Month is worth it if you want a finished quilt without buying a whole kit up front. You get fabric and instructions for one section each month. A kit is better if you want everything in one box today. New programs open throughout the year. Check our Block of the Month collection for what’s open to register now.

Key takeaways

  • BOM: one section a month, registration fee plus a monthly kit. You are signing up for the whole program.
  • Kit: every fabric in one shipment. Better when you want to start this weekend.
  • Standard BOM shipping and handling is $7.95 per monthly shipment. Each program has a private Facebook group.

A Block of the Month is worth it if you want a finished quilt without paying for every fabric on day one. Each month, a kit arrives with the fabrics and instructions for one section of a full-size quilt. Think of it as a monthly quilt fabric subscription that ends with a quilt on your bed. A quilt kit is better if you want every piece in one box today and plan to start this weekend.

How a Stitchin' Heaven Block of the Month works

  • Pick a program and register. You pay a non-refundable registration fee to reserve your spot. It covers upfront materials and keeps the monthly price lower. You register for the whole program, so pick a quilt you'll love for the long haul.
  • A kit ships each month. You get the fabric and instructions for that month's block. Many programs include the borders and binding, and some include the backing. Each program's page lists exactly what's in the box.
  • Go at your own pace. You don't have to keep up every month. Plenty of quilters stitch a few blocks at a time.
  • You're never on your own. Each program has a private Facebook group, so you stitch among friends. If you cut a piece wrong, call us. Small fabric mistakes can often be replaced if we have the stock.
  • Shipping is $7.95 per monthly shipment. Orders over 3 pounds and international orders may cost more. You can also pick your kit up in the shop in Quitman.

Is a Block of the Month worth it?

It is if you:

  • like a steady pace and a smaller monthly bill
  • want a quilt designed and kitted for you, with the colors already coordinated
  • enjoy a group to cheer you on

It isn't if you might drop out after month two. The registration fee is never refunded, and canceling costs $75 before or during month 1, $50 in month 2, and $25 from month 3 on. If you aren't sure you'll stick with it, a quilt kit is a safer first step.

Find your program

Our rotating library has something for every taste, including precut and laser-cut options that take some of the cutting off your plate. We add new programs throughout the year, so see our current Block of the Month programs for what's open to register now. Read each product page for the finished size, what's included and the real fees before you register.

Already own the pattern? Tell us in the order comments. We can often leave the pattern out and issue store credit. Precut and laser-cut appliqué programs have to include the pattern.

Not ready to commit to a whole quilt?

Our quilt kits give you everything in one box, in precut, pieced, appliqué and paper piece styles.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Block of the Month program worth it?

Yes, if you like a deadline and a smaller monthly bill. You finish a full-size quilt without buying every fabric on day one. It is not worth it if you might drop out after month two; you register for the entire program, the registration fee is not refundable, and cancellations have a fee.

What is the difference between a BOM and a quilt kit?

A kit is the fabrics (and usually the pattern) in one box. A BOM is that same quilt split across monthly shipments. Precut and laser-cut BOM options skip some of the cutting. Borders and binding often arrive in an early month so dye lots match.

What Block of the Month programs is Stitchin' Heaven running?

A rotating library. Programs on the collection as of August 2026 include Grandma's Garden, Toil and Trouble, Precut Sewology, Among the Birches, Botanical Sketchbook, Maison (January 2027), Oasis, and others. Open the product page for duration, size, and the real registration fee. The $25 on some cards is not the monthly kit price.

Can I cancel a BOM whenever I want?

You are registering for the entire program. If you need to cancel, say so right away. The registration fee is not refundable. Cancellation fees as published: $75 before or during month 1, $50 in month 2, $25 from month 3 on.
