St. Patrick's day is a ways out. Nothing like being prepared right?

Quilting Inspiration: Shamrock Free Pattern

After the last few dreary, rainy days, I needed something bright to remind me that Spring is just around the corner. Shamrocks are popping up all over my Pinterest and Instagram feeds. I couldn't resist a little Luck of the Irish! I pulled most of these stunning green fabrics from the store, a few came from my stash. I love green and my stash seems to have more than its fair share. (It has even more now, but we're not going to talk about that.)

This block is pretty simple. I was able to sew up a few in one afternoon. A few tools really helped a lot. First off, I can't begin to tell you how much I love my Martelli Rotary Mat. It made trimming all the blocks a breeze. I also used Creative Grids Square Rulers in 5.5", 6.5" and 12.5". Creative Grids Rulers have little gripper patches that keep them from slipping on the fabric. They make trimming and marking so much easier.

This will make a 12 1/2" unfinished block.

From green fabric cut:

12 -- 3 1/2" squares

1 -- 6 1/2" square

From light fabric cut:

9 -- 2 3/8" squares

2 -- 5 1/2" squares

1. Snowball corners: Place right sides together, a 3 1/2" green square and a 2 3/8" light square on the corner. Draw a diagonal line. Sew along marked line. Trim to 1/4" and press open. Make 9.

2. Make stem: Place right sides together, a 6 1/2" green square and a 5 1/2" light square on the corner. Draw a diagonal line. Sew along marked line. Trim to 1/4" and press open. Repeat on opposite corner with second 5 1/2" light square.

3. Make clover leaves: Place right sides together, 2 of the snowballed 3 12" in squares. Sew a 1/4" seam. Then place right sides together, a snowballed 3 1/2" square and a green square. Sew 1/4" seam. To finish leaf, place right sides together, using picture as a guide. Sew a 1/4" seam. Press. Make 3.

4. Trim blocks to 6 1/2" square. Arrange 3 clover leaf blocks and a stem block, using picture as a guide. Use 1/4" seams to finish the block. Press.

I made 3 Shamrocks. Then I made a lucky four leaf clover by using a fourth clover leaf instead of a stem. I'm going to make a table runner from all 4 blocks. What will you do with yours?

In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day I'll share one of my favorite Irish Blessings.

May there always be work for your hands to do.

May your purse always hold a coin or two.

May the sun always shine upon your window pane.

May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.

My the hand of a friend always be near to you and

May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
