Sandra joined our Stitchin' Heaven family in 2006 as the Block of the Month manager. She is also a long arm quilter. She does beautiful work quilting many of our shop models, several of which, have been featured in magazines.

Instructor: Scott Flanagan

Scott Flanagan

Hi, My Name is Scott Flanagan. My quilting journey started at the age of 7, sewing alongside my grandmother making quilts for Lutheran World Relief, but I come from a family of crafters and woodworkers.

I started 4th and Main Designs in 2011. Since then, my patterns have been frequently found in Quiltmaker, McCalls Quilting, Fons & Porter, and Quilters World magazines. I love the endless possibilities available when designing patterns and get super excited when putting together a project and typically end up with a sample within a day or two. As for my favorite part of quilting, really all of it! From designing to cutting, to piecing, to quilting, to binding (OK, that one may be a lie!). But it is all part of the creative process, and by skipping a step, it feels as though part of the project is missing.

I have two strong quilting philosophies: (1) A quilt is only complicated if you have been told it is hard beforehand, and (2) you learn some of the best lessons from the mistakes made along the quilting Journey. With those two thoughts, I strive to write patterns that no matter how hard they look, a confident beginner with sewing experience could handle.

Michelle Hiatt - Award Winning Quilt Designer and National Quilting Instructor

Michelle Hiatt

Michelle Renee Hiatt is an award-winning Quilter, Designer, and National Instructor. Michelle has been sewing since before she can remember and fell in love with quilting over 20 years ago.

She is a certified Professional Process Expert (LSSMBB); she uses her process improvement techniques and applies them to her quilting and teaching others how to simplify their piecing while improving the quality of their quilt making. She teaches throughout the United States at National Quilt Shows and Retreats and is knows for her humor, enthusiasm, and encouragement!

Michelle is the designer for her own pattern line Sew On The Go, and her designs have appeared in several international Quilting Magazines. Additionally, she is a Certified Instructor for Studio 180 Design, and many of her patterns have been published in their Modern 180 pattern line.

Barbara Dann - Quilting Instructor

Barbara Dann

Barbara began her quilting career as a longarm machine quilter on July 1, 2000. For 10 years, she quilted clients’ quilts and only made a few simple quilts for herself. Then, she started vending at most of the major quilt shows on the east coast and mid-west, representing a fabric cutting system. Her booth was next to Jeff and Deb Tuckers’ (Studio 180 Design) at one of those shows, and they became fast friends! Deb and Jeff introduced Barbara to the two tools they demonstrated – the Wing Clipper and the Hunter’s Star. Unfortunately, it wasn’t love at first sight. You see, Barbara was (and still is) a very talented machine quilter but wasn’t much of a piecer – she mostly found it difficult and frustrating.

Having the right tools changed everything! Barbara began making quilts she never thought possible – Hunter’s Stars, Flying Geese, Lemoyne Stars – and the list goes on and on. Then, she began working at the quilt shows as part of the Studio 180 Design team. And what she enjoyed most was teaching quilters how to use the tools and share all the other quilting hints and tips she learned.

Barbara has been teaching at guilds, shops, retreats, and quilt shows for the past 10 years. Her teaching style is relaxed, informative, and fun! She enjoys teaching quilters of all skill levels and shares many tips and ideas that make piecing easier, faster, and more accurate.

Hunter's Sky

By Michelle Hiatt

Instructor: Michelle Hiatt

Hunter’s Sky combines the Hunter’s Star Blocks and the Nine-Patch Star Blocks. When the blocks come together, they form a double set of eight pointed stars, one with diamonds and the other with triangles. The Nine-Patch Star is what gives the quilt that beautiful circular motion. Both the Hunter’s Star Block and Nine-Patch Star Blocks are made with a Dark Background, Light Accent and eight assorted Bright fabrics. As designed, this quilt has a Dark Background Border, you could elect to substitute that for a printed fabric or add a traditional border in addition to the Dark Background Border. Hunter’s Sky comes together easily with the Studio 180 Design’s Wedge Star™, V Block™, and Tucker Trimmer III™ tools. Michelle designed Hunter’s Sky, while mourning her beloved German Shepherd, Hunter, who passed away at 9 years old, after a battle with degenerative myelopathy. It only seemed fitting to name this quilt Hunter’s Sky, may he rest in peace.

Diamonds In The Sky

By Michelle Hiatt

Instructor: Barbara Dann

Diamonds in the Sky is a brilliant high contrast quilt. The Corner Beam™ blocks used throughout the design give you an alternating diamond illusion that simply radiates beauty. While we made our Diamonds in the Sky project with a medley of bright fat quarters for our stars, you could use 6” strips or scraps of bright fabric to make this a dynamite stash-buster project.

San Diego, CA: August 7 - 14, 2022

San Diego is such a fun city! Not only does it have the Balboa Park, which is home to the San Diego Zoo (and just a few minutes from our hotel), you have well-known attractions like Sea World, Old Town San Diego, La Jolla Shores, and an abundance of beaches, museums, and other attractions. We all know that it never rains in southern California, which is why it makes it so beautiful with an average temperature of 72 degrees year-round.

We’ve got such a fun trip planned. We are planning to make a stop at the San Diego Zoo, have a picnic lunch. Our instructors for this Land Ahoy will be Wendy Mathson and Donna Thomas. Should be a really fun week!

We hope you can join us!

Land Ahoy! San Diego, CA

All this for only $1999 Double Occupancy.

Wendy Mathson

Wendy is a teacher, pattern designer, lecturer, inventor of quilting tools, and the author of A New Light on Storm at Sea Quilts – One Block, an Ocean of Design Possibilities (C&T Publishing). She taught for Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California, in 2012 and was a quilting instructor for Palomar College in San Diego for eight years. Wendy is also a founder and past president of Prayers & Squares, The Prayer Quilt Ministry, an interfaith non-profit organization with about 1300 chapters in 13 countries.

When Wendy started developing patterns for prayer quilts, she found she had a knack for writing simplified instructions and developing streamlined construction techniques. Her background in graphic design and printing was a natural fit, and she soon started working for publishers of quilting books as an editor and illustrator.

She loves to share many of her quilting tips and tricks in the classroom, developed over almost 30 years of teaching. Many of her students agree that they learn as much from these tiny “pearls of wisdom” as they do from the class itself. Long-time residents of southern California, Wendy, and her husband own and cultivate a small vineyard that produces three varieties of wine grapes.

Donna Thomas

Donna Lynn Thomas has been sewing since the age of four and passionately quilting since 1975. She began teaching in 1981, and while an Army wife, she lived in Germany for four years and thoroughly enjoyed teaching at a German quilt shop and various guilds throughout the country. Long out of the Army, the Thomas' have settled in Kansas for good. As a teacher for 40 years and the author of 20 books since 1987, she has also contributed articles and written columns on various quilt-related subjects to numerous publications over the years. You can see Donna on Craftsy as well as several QNN-TV episodes.

Believing that piecing quilts should be a pleasure, not a fight, her focus is on skills mastery and techniques that enable her students to enjoy frustration-free sewing. As someone who has a family of BERNINAs, she is always excited to see BERNINAs on Stitchin' Heaven cruises and retreats.

Donna and her husband provide staff assistance to one sunny golden retriever, Ellie, and a miniature apricot poodle, Buddy, whose real name should be Trouble.Needle in a Hayes Stack.

This Basket Weave quilt is a throwback to a traditional block. It just got a remake. Batiks make up not only the blue weave but the cream background as well. The blues are placed in a way that the shades flow from light at the top to dark at the bottom. The background is comprised of a mix of creams in a scattered arrangement. Each quilt will be just a bit unique because of the random placement if the cream background pieces.
